Five Essential Packing Tips
655 Essential Packing Tips for Moving
1) Boxes are necessary for moving because they are usually quite regular sized, easy to carry and when taped together correctly, are very sturdy. You can get boxes from a membership store like Costco, Sam's Club or a box store. Some movers even give out free boxes so don't forget to ask. Regular (uniform) sized moving boxes are important for maximizing your van space and ensuring you're not wasting areas in your transport that could otherwise be filled. You want to put heavy items like books, dvd's, cd's and silverware into smaller boxes so you or the mover can lift the box and it won't be so heavy. Pack larger and lighter items in bigger boxes. Also, don't forget to take the lamp shades off your lamps and pack them separately.
2) Large trash bags are sometimes good for items like clothing, and bedding, and when you've ran out of boxes to pack anything. Teddy bearsand stuffed animals work well in bags - edged objects, or items that are likely to be too heavy to carry in a plastic bag would definitely work better in boxes. Bags also work especially well with linens. But keep in mind most moving company's prefer the majority of the shipment to be in boxes due to the stackability in the truck. Bags do not stack well so don't over do the bags.
3) When packing, it’s important to maximize space - and pack your biggest objects first, and fill space around them. Books are easiest to pack and should be packed on there spines. Odd shaped, awkward items such as lamps, pots and pans and stereo equipment items need to be in boxes, as should dishes and other objects that are considered fragile. When packing your plates and china place a cushion of unprinted newsprint or bubble wrap at the bottom of the box. Then stack the wrapped plates on there sides so there isn't a lot of pressure on the plates. This will keep the plates from cracking or breaking.
4) Mark all boxes carefully - it makes them easier to find things in, and to sort into rooms without having to break them open. Make sure the markings are on the side of the boxes because movers usually stack them three or four at a time when delivered. Always remember to mark bags you're using for belongings clearly so that they don't get mistaken for trash by the movers - or buy completely different bags for your rubbish and your belongings.
5) While it may only take you a few weeks to pack, it can take up to six weeks - sometimes more to unpack at the other end. So though you're 'just boxing items up for a couple of days' remember that you may not to them for up to a couple of months, or perhaps more.
And importantly, don't forget to have plenty of moving tape and unprinted news print for wrapping. Bubble wrap does work well but can be very expensive. So use it sparingly.
